The Proprietary Blend Trap

The "Proprietary Blend" Trap: How Hidden Doses Quietly Waste Your Money

You flip a bottle over, ready to do your homework, and you see it: "Energy Blend — 1,200 mg." Sounds potent. But there's a problem. That one number is hiding how much of each ingredient is actually inside — and that's not an accident. It's one of the oldest tricks in the supplement industry.

What a proprietary blend really is

A proprietary blend lists several ingredients grouped under a single total weight, without telling you the amount of any individual one. Brands say it protects their "secret formula." In practice, it protects something else: the fact that the expensive, effective ingredients are often present in tiny amounts, while cheap filler ingredients make up most of that big number.

The math they're hoping you skip

Say a "1,200 mg blend" lists an impressive-sounding active first, followed by four cheap fillers. Because ingredients are listed by weight, that headline active could be a meaningful dose — or it could be 50 mg with 1,150 mg of filler behind it. You have no way to know. And when you can't verify the dose, you can't know if the product will do anything at all.

"Fairy dusting" — the close cousin

Even on labels that do disclose amounts, watch for fairy dusting: including a trendy ingredient at a token dose just to list it on the label. A quick gut check — if a hot ingredient shows up at a few milligrams when research typically uses far more, it's there for the marketing, not for you.

What a transparent label looks like

The cleanest brands do the opposite of hiding. On a well-made label you'll see:

  • Every ingredient with its own disclosed amount — no blends, nothing lumped together.
  • Named, quality forms — e.g., magnesium glycinate, not just "magnesium."
  • Doses that match the research, not token sprinkles.
  • Proof of third-party testing so the label is verified by someone other than the seller.

That's the standard every For Fathers formula is built to: fully disclosed doses, no proprietary blends, and third-party testing — the kind of transparency fewer than 7% of supplements on the market can claim.

Your 30-second blend check

  • Scan the Supplement Facts panel for the word "blend." If key actives are buried in one, you can't verify the dose.
  • Check whether each ingredient has its own milligram amount.
  • Ask whether the important ingredients are dosed at levels that actually do something.

Don't want to squint at the fine print? Snap a photo of any label with Compare My Supplement and it'll flag proprietary blends, weak doses, and missing testing — then score the product side-by-side against For Fathers. Or let the Supplement Quiz hand you a fully-disclosed stack for your goals.

A proprietary blend isn't protecting a secret recipe — it's protecting a margin. Once you can spot one, you stop paying for mystery and start buying results you can actually verify.
